2019 Balsells Fellow Judit Giró Benet has been named the winner of the James Dyson International Award for her work on the Blue Box, an early breast cancer detection kit. Judit started this work as her graduation thesis in BME at the University of Barcelona. She joined the MECPS joint Engineering-ICS self-supporting program as a Balsells Fellow in 2019 and further developed the Blue Box for her MECPS capstone project. Upon graduation, she joined Professor Fadi Kurdahi’s group as a junior researcher seeking to solidify this technology and eventually bring it to the market through a startup company. “This award will be of great help in achieving our quest to one day make breast cancer detection a ubiquitous home-based experience”, said Kurdahi. Judit’s entry was selected among 1800+ entries into the competition.
