Welcome message

In a 1995 and thanks to a generous endowment from Mr. Pete Balsells, Sr. and his family, the School of Engineering at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) established the Balsells Fellowship program. The Generalitat de Catalunya, through the Departament d'Universitats, Recerca i Societat de la Informació (DURSI) became a very important partner of the program shortly after its inception. Together, UCI and the Generalitat launched the program in the fall of 1995 and the first Balsells-Generalitat fellow (Sergi de Miguel Sanz) arrived in Irvine in September of 1996. The program's main goal is to prepare the most talented young engineers and scientists from Catalonia in their pursuit of post-graduate degrees (M.S. and Ph.D.) and post-doctoral studies in engineering. The program thus promotes the scientific and technological advancement of Catalonia and strengthens the collaborations between UCI and California on the one hand and Catalonia and its university system on the other. The fellowships are jointly funded by the Balsells Fellowship Fund, DURSI , and the Henry Samueli School of Engineering at UCI.

The Balsells Fellowship has a total value of $49,500 of which approximately $27,000 covers annual tuition, fees, and health insurance. The balance of $21,000 is paid to the recipient as a stipend in twelve installments of approximately $1,750 each. Each postdoctoral fellowship includes a monthly stipend of approximately $3,000 and health insurance for the recipient and his/her family. In both cases, there is also a one time $1,500 stipend to cover trip expenses.  To date, the program has awarded 68 graduate fellowships and 11 postdoctoral fellowships for a total of over $2.6 million in 1st year awards. If you are interested in applying for a graduate (M.S. or Ph.D.) fellowship, please submit your applications for admission to the UC Irvine School of Engineering by February 1 st each year. You may apply if you have received your degree (2nd cycle) in Engineering or related field from a recognized Catalan university (or from a recognized European university if you have previously resided in Catalonia for at least 10 years). You must have received your degree within the last five years or plan to graduate by the summer of the year you are applying.

To apply for a graduate (pre-doctoral) Balsells Fellowship, applicants must have been admitted into any of the graduate programs in the Henry Samueli School of Engineering at UC Irvine. To apply for admission into any of the School of Engineering graduate programs, you should complete an online application and submit TOEFL and GRE scores, three letters of recommendation, and your academic records from your university studies. All documents must be received in Irvine by February 1.

The recipients of the Balsells fellowship will be chosen from among those Catalan students admitted into UC Irvine's School of Engineering.

For this purpose, a second application must be submitted to the AGAUR in Barcelona AFTER you have been admitted at UC Irvine.

To apply for a Balsells postdoctoral fellowship, you must have a professor or research group at UC Irvine's School of Engineering willing to serve as your host. The hosting group must be willing to contribute financially to the fellowship. For details please contact Professor R. H. Rangel at the e-mail address below.
