A governmental and academic delegation from Catalonia visited UCI in June of 2014. The group was led by Conseller for Economy and Knowledge Andreu Mas-Colell and included UPC President Enric Fossas, UPF President Jaume Casals, as well as The Generalitat Directors General for Universities and Research, LLuis Jofre Roca and Josep Maria Martorell, respectively. The meeting was also attended by Balsells Fellowship founder Pete Balsells and the students from the Balsells Fellowship Program at UCI. Two MOUs were signed during the visit, one with the Catalan Government and another one with both the government and UPC. One planned collaboration would sponsor faculty visits to a from  Catalonia and joint symposia. A collaboration between UCI and UPC would involve UCI’s participation in the development of a new UPC campus in Besos that will concentrate  on energy, materials, and bioengineering. Student participation is also envisioned.
